Skiing in Sun Valley, Oil Painting on Canvas Signed "M. Abrams", Circa 1938
-
Description
This cross-country skiing scene evokes the early days of the first American destination ski resort, Sun Valley, Idaho. It is done in oil paints on canvas and is signed in the lower right "M. Abrams". Although the artist did not date the painting, it's origin can be determined by the style of clothes, the type of ski equipment, and the lack of chairlifts on Bald Mountain. These clues set this painting shortly before World War II when this recently-opened ski resort closed for the war's duration. It is in the Impressionist style and is a genre scene of western art.
This painting is framed in a new plein-air-style frame of wood painted black. The original frame is shown in the second-to-last photo; it is in bad condition. On the front of the now discarded original frame, there is a paper label remnant, as seen in the photograph, identifying the location as Sun Valley. The size of the unframed painting is 9" x 12"; the overall size including the frame is listed above. -
