Victorian 19thc British Lithograph of "Horse Racing" Reverse Glass Matte C.1875

$ 1,200
  • Description
    Wonderful polychromed lithograph under glass with reverse glass hand painted gold gilt rectangular double lined border, along with a hand painted black matte; unique; I have not seen this before. Scene is full of action depicting a country Sunday horse racing event in the English countryside; a traditional 19th century occurrence with the British aristocracy at that time. The picture is replete with the proverbial festivities of nobility on horseback; in full gallop etc, along with the steeplechase part of the course, riders falling, and spectators on horseback in the background watching the action mid race, and the usual festivities that accompany such an activity.

    Unusual to find this presentation of an art form with the reverse glass black matting and gold outline; so much so that renowned Newman galleries thought enough of the picture to offer it from their inventory in their Philadelphia showrooms. They were in business from 1865; a well respected art gallery that sold works of art for over 150 years (see image with label affixed to rear).

    Dimensions: 14 1/2" x 21" x 1 1/4" deep (glass matte and lithograph)
    18" x 24 1/4" x 1 1/4" deep (with the 2" frame)

    Provenance: From my own personal collection of art, furniture, and collectibles

    Note: Basically this is "one of a pair" which are different enough to offer separately, but similar enough that a collector might want the both of them.
    This one is portrays mid race while the other one depicts approaching the finish line.
