Description
Large porcelain plaque of a hunting scene by Haak, 1874
German, 1874
Frame: diameter 35.5cm
Plaque: diameter 29.5cm
This impressive porcelain plaque depicts a woodland hunting scene. The work is by the artist R. Haak, and the plaque is signed and dated on the lower edge ‘geno*r(?) R. Haak 1874’.
The plaque is large in size. In the centre of the composition, a herd of deer can be seen fleeing in terror from a pair of hunters, one of whom hides in the left middle-ground and the other in the far background. The artist effectively captures the fear of the animals, who sprint towards the viewer with their muscles taut. Particularly impressive is the handling of colour: the rich brown and green tones of the animals and their verdant surroundings are contrasted by the pale clouded sky in the right upper quadrant.
The plaque sits within an elegant ormolu frame, which is a later addition.
With its unusual colours and captivating narrative, this plaque would be a wonderful addition to any interior. - More Information
