17th century Flemish painting, Saint Philip baptizing the eunuch

$ 13,000
  • Description
    A splendid Flemish painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a rare biblical scene, the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch by Saint Philip. A high dignitary of the Queen of Ethiopia meets the Saint on the road to Jerusalem and the two discuss issues of faith. Eventually they stop at a small river and the eunuch is baptized, the first baptism of a Gentile (not a Jew) recounted in the New Testament. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the foreground to the background, where the royal procession with horses and servants can be glimpsed. The palette is warm with a strong contrast between the bright red of Saint Philip's cloak and the golds and blues of the eunuch's precious robe. Just behind, two pages hold the sword and the wonderful turban while a dove descending from the sky represents divine approval. 19th century frame in richly carved and lacquered wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and recoloring in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Interior size H 53 x W 40 cm.
