Vitrales al Alba - Abstract Painting With Pastel Colors: Blue, Turquoise, Azul
-
Description
Alfredo Aya's Vitrales al Alba - Stained Glass Window at Dawn - is a 35 x 27.5-inch abstract oil painting on canvas. The primary colors are blue and turquoise. The image seems to be illuminated by an internal light. Aya broke the colors into odd shapes, one moving into the next one. As suggested in the title, Aya wants to give the impression of the sun light through the stained glass windows in Gothic Churches, and the same sense of mystery that emanates from it.
Alfredo Aya’s paintings navigate the delicate boundary between figuration and abstraction and have the delicacy and poetry of a landscape when perceived through the muting effect of a misty morning. Shapes rhythmically appear and disappear through large fields of primary colors, vivid yet subdued, informed by the tropical landscapes and Caribbean seashores of his beloved Colombia. He writes “For me the color is the music of the painting, the grays like the silence of the music unite the colors, which sometimes oppose each other to have more strength or complement each other forming a harmony.”
Aya was born in Paris, where he lived until his early twenties, beginning his painting career immersed in the artistic work of modern French masters.
After going back to Colombia, living mostly in San Andres Island and Cartagena, he honed his artistic approach. His most figurative paintings bear similarities to Post-Impressionist works by artists like Paul Gauguin, especially in the choice of colors and a synthetist style. In his most abstract paintings, Aya combines geometric and biomorphic shapes defined by soft pastel colors, reminiscent of the spatial composition of Chilean Surrealist painter Roberto Matta and the dreamy creations of French artist Émile Bernard. -
