Description
The goat plays a strange role in mythology and legend; perhaps its ambivalence, appearing on both sides of the spectrum, give it the appeal it enjoys. Most ancient cultures from the Assyrians via the ancient Greeks and Vikings have a goat appear in their legends. Berlin's goat skulls borrow from these traditions and provide a twist on their lore. His use of gold leafing creates a sparkling, iridescent work that flickers in changing light, a silvery grey dawn or a fiery golden sunset reflect through the piece. With this painting Berlin has given us a time travelling creature that is bang up to date with its hooves still embedded in the mythical times before modern man.
