This Neoclassical oil on canvas painting of Moses, signed by Antoine Etex and dated around 1862, stands as a captivating tribute to classical artistry and biblical history. Full of symbolism and stunning painterly facility, the muscular figure of moses is scrunched into the format of the painting, a common romantic and necolassical composition that gives energy and life to the picture, as though if the figure stood up or swung their arm they would break through the picture plane. Flames emerge from the forehead of Moses, which is a symbolic nod to the passage in Exodus 34:35 "And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone" after Moses spoke with God, who gave him the 10 Commandments.

His gesture is also a stunning a subtle element of the painting, looking back as though addressing his people, and pointing forward to show them the way.

On the back of the canvas is the stamp "Brullon", which was a producer of art supplies and canvas in Paris during the era. In Good Vintage Condition, signed and dated in the lower right hand corner. Fitted with the original Oak frame from the Period.

Antoine Etex (1808-1888) was a prominent French sculptor, painter, and architect known for his Neoclassical style. Etex's notable contributions include his work on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where he sculpted two of its grand reliefs, "Resistance" and "Peace," which are celebrated for their expressive power and intricate detail. His diverse artistic achievements solidified his legacy as a significant figure in 19th-century French art.
