Description
Auger Lucas (1685-1765) "Zephyr and Flora", oil on canvas.
15.75" x 10"
Frame 20" x 14"
Numerous stamps and exhibition labels to the stretcher.
Auger Lucas was born in 1685 in Paris and died there in 1765. He was accepted as an academician in 1722 and exhibited at the Salon in 1751.
Lucas painted at least two versions of "Zephyr and Flora". Another, with only minor variations, hangs in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, France.
Zephyr and Flora was a popular subject in the 18th century, painted most famously by Tiepolo. Zephyr, the god of the spring winds, is depicted with butterfly wings. Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers is depicted wearing a flora wreath. -
