Description
Oil on wooden panel painting of horse riding French cavaliers in battle. Signed lower left. Not dated. Original period gilded frame in fine condition. Painting has been recently professionally cleaned. Painting and frame circa 1875. Overall framed measurements are 16 by 14 inches. Condition of the painting is very good. Provenance: Saint Petersburg, Florida estate.
Charles Michel Guilbert D'anelle was a pupil of Horace Vernet ( known for his military paintings) and Paul Delaroche. Born in 1820. He made many portraits as well as history paintings. He was appointed director of the Avignon drawing school. He also worked for local master glassmakers for the repair of various stained glass windows. He died in 1889 and is buried in the cemetery of Saint-Véran d'Avignon; on his tomb is placed his bronze bust sculpted by one of his pupils Alphonse Guérin (1844-1868). -
