“Approaching Storm”

Description
Here for your consideration is a dramatic oil on wooden panel academic painting of the Continental School. Unsigned; circa 1840. The painting depicts two young men netting fish in a rural stream with an approaching storm with lightning bolts and a horse and rider heading quickly for cover near a windmill in the distance. The young men appear to be to wrapped up in catching the fish to see the dangerous storm approaching. A young woman near the old mill house looks out to survey the situation while a young boy appearing bored guards the bucket of fish.
The painting has recently been cleaned. Several small specks of restoration in the sky and a small area in the water to the right of the young men in the steam. Overall framed 34.5 by 45.75 inches in antique ornate gold leaf gesso frame in fine condition.
Gallery label verso. The frame is not period but circa 1880 to 1890. Provenance: Long Island, New York estate. -
