This Geometric painting realized in 1960 by Edna Lewis exudes a subtle brilliance through her powerful material technique and well balanced scale. While realized in the era of abstract expressionism, the color and rectilinear nature of the painting evoke the post-impressionist landscapes of Cezanne with variations in pigments and the juxtaposition of like hues that anticipates later contemporaries such as Sean Scully. The work is brimming with associations to nature, utilizing earth derived pigments such as iron-oxide and lead white. These colors physically as well as visually evoke the natural metallic reds of soil and earth alongside a symphony of other shape regions and vibrations. Blues bring the mind to calm skies and roiling oceans, greens to the violet shadowy calm underneath a verdant spring canopy, glints of light peaking through the shifting edges. Black linear elements highlight the separation of shapes in a series of incised trenches in the paint surface. Colors emerge from hiding and sing through the gaps left for them alongside the newer layers of paint pressing down from above. Features a custom gallery walnut frame with gilt accenting on the inner bevel and linen floater surrounding the image. The dimensions of the canvas region are 24" by 38". Excellent vintage condition.
