Description
Active/lived: New York and New Jersey.
Skating at Sunset. Signed and dated (l.r.): G.H. McCord, ’87.
Oil on canvas. 22 ¼” x 30 ¾”.
Over-all in excellent condition, appears to retain the original carved gilt 19th c. frame.
Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts; The Liros Gallery, Blue Hill, Maine.
George McCord was known for his atmospheric marine and landscape paintings. As a resident of Brooklyn, he studied at the Hudson River Institute and by 1868 he was exhibiting at the National Academy of Design. Skating at Sunset, painted in 1887 most likely in New York state, reveals the luminist affects in the sky which he became known for, a style his contemporaries also adopted during this time period.
