About
From 1945 up to the artist’s death in 1963, Braque produced some of his greatest paintings, masterly piecing together all the knowledge he’d accumulated throughout his life. Having relieved the trauma of the Great War through World War II, the sorrow and grief brought about by the events inevitably translated into his work. Paintings realised during this time often depicted ordinary subject matter and exuded a feeling of gravitas and depth to them, unparalleled to Braque’s earlier, more playful cubist works.
As seen in Théière noire et deux citrons (1948), the dark tones of a feeble teapot echo the dim palettes of other still lives of the same time, while the lemons, often portrayed in bright and lively yellows, here lost all their saturation even against the off-white cloth framing the composition.
By the time this painting was finished in 1948, Braque had become a renowned artist, on both a national and global scale. Though he was a solitary figure and spent most of his time in the studio, he did inspire many great modern artists, who realised that if they wanted to see Braque, they would have to make the effort to visit him in his home in Paris or Varengeville. Amongst them was the Russian painter Nicolas de Staël, who would sit on the wall in front of Braque’s Parisian home and wait for the Frenchman to come out to talk, or if he was lucky, be invited up to the studio. It was the depth and compositions, the balance between objects and space, that would engage the minds of great artists like de Staël or Joan Miró.
