Dialogue Within Oneself is a 46 x 36-inch abstract surrealist oil painting on canvas. The painting has a simple gallery display frame in natural wood with a black reveal. The primary colors are rust, white, and blue. The composition subtly threads between figurative and abstract imagery, with clearly recognizable profiles of female figureheads gently morphing into abstract shapes. The figures' sharp and vivid yellow eyes and the graphic outline of their profiles have references in Egyptian iconography, as Vanni traveled extensively in Egypt.

Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He was actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He taught color theory at the Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for over 30 years. His works have been shown in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
