Great 16th century Flemish painting on panel, The Calling of Saint Matthew
-
Description
Great Flemish painting from the second half of the 16th century. Oil on panel artwork depicting a fascinating evangelical episode, the Calling of Saint Matthew. A painting of extraordinary pictorial quality and bright colours. The scene is set in an interior rich in minute details, with a strong sense of perspective and a theatrical use of light. The figures are solid and sculpted, with dynamic poses and expressive gestures. The protagonist of the composition is Matthew, depicted as a tax collector, as he turns towards Jesus who invites him to follow him. Some characters remain with their heads bowed, distracted by their occupations, while in the background we can see the splendid architecture of Jerusalem in the distance. Painting attributable to the workshop of Jan Sanders Van Hemessen (1504-1567), lacking authentication. A pupil of Hendrick van Cleve, he worked mainly in Antwerp and became a prestigious member of the Guild of Saint Luke, the most important artists' corporation in Flanders. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with new parquetry on the back. It has some paint drops (see photo), overall in good condition. Interior size H 124 x W 166 cm.
