"Construct 90," 2023 Abstract Acrylic Painting - Assemblage by James Kennedy
-
Description
"Construct 90" by artist James Kennedy, is masterful abstract acrylic assemblage on a shaped masonite panel floating in a white shadow box signed on the verso. In this rare genre for the artist, James carved and cut pieces of masonite and assembled them, some with nailheads, into positive and negative space. Each piece is layered with acrylic washes to which he adds emulsion, glazes and scraping to build up individual planes of color. The artist incorporates a sophisticated palette of primarily neutral shades of pale grey, ivory and griege. Touches of blues and black energize the surface resulting in a rich and striking bejeweled composition of intersecting planes of color and dimensional space. In his own words, James describes his art as "thought forms" which are unpremeditated projects that map a stream-of-consciouness mode of thinking." These abstract paintings feature intricate, tightly knitted surfaces that rely on a buoyant tension of line, shape, texture and tonality. Reminiscent of shifting tectonic plates, Kennedy's overlapping forms and pathways channel energy into lyrical systems of tension and balance, form and space, tone and hue. The results are meticulously crafted architectural landscapes of tertiary colors exquisitely ordered and balanced while simultaneously possessing rhythmic and lyrical surfaces.
James Kennedy, was born in Northern Ireland and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy and Rhodec Academy of Design in London where he respectively received BA degrees in Arts and Interior and Architectural Design.
