JOHN FREDERICK HERRING SR. (1795-1865)
Lived/active: England.
Foig a Ballagh.
Inscribed on stretcher, Foig a Ballagh JF Herring Sr., 1845.
Oil on canvas.
21 x 25 ½” with frame.
Great condition, minor in-painting from frame abrasions.
Provenance: Purchased at Brimfield, 1990; Private Collection, CT.
John Frederick Herring Sr. is best known for his coach and race-horse genre paintings. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1826, at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists from 1841-1852. The portrait of Foig a Ballag, foaled 1841 in Ireland was a thoroughbred racehorse and winner of the Grear St. Leger at Doncaster, 1844. -
