Description
Surrealist Oil Painting, Jorge Ignacio Nazábal Cowan Cuban Artist
Offered for sale is an oil on canvas figurative and surrealist painting by the Cuban artist Jorge Ignacio Nazábal Cowan (b.1962-). This colorful and vivid painting superimposes butterflies over the face of a woman and a full nude figure of the same woman. In the artist's own words, he explains his vision of art and life: « The universe lives in us and finds wings in our thought to know itself. Looking around, we find ourselves, and looking inside we can discover the universe. » Jorge Ignacio Nazábal Cowan is an award-winning artist based in Cuba who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Spain, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Panama. The essence of his art originates from the idea that the same cosmic dust present in rocks and mountains for millions of years occupies every corner of the universe, that it is also within us and all beings who are part of nature. He was born on November 27, 1962, in Havana Cuba, where he still resides. In 1985 he graduated with a Bachelor of Biological Sciences from the University of Havana (1980-1985). He worked as a Cytogeneticist for 12 years in the Laboratory of Prenatal Cytogenetic Diagnosis of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana. Since 1993 he began to alternate this work with artistic creation. Seeking to improve the family economy, he sold his first drawings in Public Markets where he traded with Artisans. In 1996 he enrolled at the San Alejandro Art Academy and from the following year his only professional job was Painting. He did four exhibitions and several collective exhibitions between 1999 and 2003. Later he decided to dedicate himself more to commissioned works and family life but didn't stop participating in important national and international collective exhibitions. In 2011 he became a member of the Society for the Art of Imagination and won the First Prize in their online portrait competition. Then he participated in two of his exhibitions in London in 2011 and in Vienna during 2012.
In the early 2000s he had several solo and group exhibitions in Cuba and other countries including Mexico, Spain and Italy. His classical surrealism draws on Magritte and Dali, particularly using the device of having one set of images implying another - particularly using the kind of optical illusions that Dali enjoyed so much and Magritte's use of stone textured bodies. He also draws on the late 16th century painter Arcimboldo's device for the figuring of heads and bodies using piled up objects. Nazábal particularly likes to use butterflies and fruits. -
