    Striped Bass with Rod and Reel on a River Bank.
    Signed and dated on the rod handle, “J.B. Stearns ’48 (1848).
    Oil on a poplar wood panel, housed in the original tiger-maple veneered frame.
    Over-all in great condition, minor in-painting to areas of craquelure.
    Although Junius Stearns was best known for his historical portrait and genre paintings done earlier in his career, he later included fishing subjects which no doubt was inspired by his trips to Vermont and western New York state. This portrait of two striped bass is painted on a rare arch-form panel with a conforming frame.
