Superb and rare Study of Aladdin Ballet Costume by Léon Bakst, France, 1919
-
Description
Beautiful study of a ballet costume by Léon Bakst (1866-1924) from 1919.
This painting was created by Léon Bakst, painter, illustrator and costume designer for the Russian Ballets from 1909 to 1921. He designed costumes inspirated by oriental and ancient themes, as seen in this study depicting a Persian costume for "Aladin ou la lampe merveilleuse" ("Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp"). This study was published in Georges-Gabriel Thenon's (Rip) magazine.
The artwork was made with gouache and graphite on laid paper. It comes from the famous Rateau family's collection and their stamp is located on the back of the mounting along with an inventory number.
The signature "Bakst" is on the lower part on the right.
Size : 10.4 x 6.7 inches/26.4 x 17 cm
The painting is sold with its old and beautiful frame decorated with mirrors.
A second costume design (Archer costume) by Bakst in a similar size, same frame and same provenance is also proposed ; this could constitute a beautiful pair. -
