This remarkable oil painting by Spanish artist Manuel López Cantero presents a captivating view of the Alcázar of Seville’s courtyard. The Alcázar, originally built in the 11th century as a fortress under Muslim rule to defend the city, was later expanded in the 14th century for King Peter of Castile (1334–1369).
Set within the courtyard of the Palace of King Peter, the painting showcases the awe-inspiring Mudéjar style. Between 1364 and 1366, King Peter commissioned skilled Arab and Berber craftsmen to contribute to the palace's design, honouring the legacy of Muslim architecture. López Cantero skilfully captures the splendour of this space, with remarkable attention to detail that lends the work a photographic quality. The artist’s use of warm, earthy tones brings the scene to life, while vibrant hues from the intricate green geometric tiles and colourful wall paintings add dynamic visual appeal.
In the centre of the courtyard, a polychrome plant pot sits beside a small fountain, its waters adding serenity to the composition. Nearby, a tasselled rug adds texture to the scene.
The painting is framed in an Arabic-style giltwood frame, further enhancing its historical significance. It is signed in the lower left corner ‘M Lopez Cantero’.
Such paintings were popular among travellers, who often acquired them as mementos of their journeys to distant lands. This stunning piece makes a distinctive addition to any collection of fine art.
