    This is a stunning theorem of watercolor on paper in a clear glass compote. Theorem painting was an art form that was taught at schoolgirl academies and was popular with young women from the early decades of the 19th century until around 1870. Theorem was painted with stencils of single elements that were layered to form a composition.     This beautiful and expertly executed theorem is reputedly from Middletown, RI, circa 1840. The period gilt frame measures 22” x 24” and has a sight size of 19” x 20”. The condition of the theorem is excellent but for expected toning.
