Large Orientalist painting of figures praying at the shore by Van Elven
Dutch, 1880
Canvas: Height 98cm, width 133cm
Frame: Height 124cm, width 159cm, depth 10cm
This stunning Orientalist scene is by the Dutch artist Pierre Tetar van Elven (1828-1908), who enjoyed success across Europe with his sensitively rendered genre scenes and landscapes. This painting from the Mayfair Gallery collection is a fine example of his work.
The painting depicts a group of figures praying at the shoreline, resting on the ground or colourful prayer mats. Two small fishing boats are moored beside them, suggesting arrival or departure. Across the water, a larger boat can be seen, illuminated in the last of the evening sun.
The location is likely Philae, Egypt. Tall palm trees crowd the shoreline, through which glimpses of buildings, ruins, and mountains can be seen. The landscape is wonderfully rendered in a gestural manner, with the dusky yellow light glimmering off the calm waters.
The painting is enclosed in a carved giltwood frame, which features a worn loaner label to the reverse. The painting is signed and indistinctly inscribed ‘P. Van Elven…’ (probably ‘Philae / Egypte / (18)80’) to the lower left.
This superb Orientalist landscape features a highly desirable subject rendered with immense painterly skill.
