Robert Henri, American, 1865 to 1929, oil on canvas painting Portrait of Georgine Wetherill Shillard Smith, 1897. No visible signature, Provenance: exhibited at PAFA 1899, descended through family, then acquired by the present owner. Robert Henri, the inspirational leader of The Eight, was to become one of the most influential teachers and artists in the history of American art. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia with Thomas Anshutz, James B. Kelly, Thomas Hovenden, 1886 to 1888, and with Robert Vonnah, 1891; Academie Julian, Paris, with William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, 1888 to 1891; Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris; Spain and Italy. Member of the Society of American Artists; Associate and Academician, National Academy; National Institute of Arts and Letters; Portrait Painters; National Arts Club; Los Angeles Modern Art Society; Boston Art Club; New Society of Artists; The Eight; American Painters and Sculptors, Paris; Society of Independent Artists; Taos Society of Artists. Awards include Universal Exposition, St. Louis; Harris medal, Art Institute of Chicago; Art Club, Philadelphia; Beck Gold Medal, PAFA; Pan-Pacific Exposition; Wilmington Society of Fine Arts.
