  • Description
Robert Wood was born in England in 1889, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1910, where he painted and traveled extensively through the western states. His Texas Bluebonnet landscapes were very popular and he later moved to California, working in Laguna Beach and the Sierra Mountains. He eventually moved to Carmel where he lived for seven years. This perpetually beautiful location and its exceptional weather clearly inspired this interpretation of a perfect Central Coast day by the sea.

This scene depicts a classic California afternoon with bright, rich colors that have been enhanced and intensified by the blue sky. The fluffy white clouds drift gently and slowly above the horizon, and the waves roll and crash up onto the rocky shore. The trees and meadow on the left are lush, green, and perfect for a picnic. This is a warm, joyous, happy place, the kind of days that childhood dreams and memories are made of.

Wood had a long and very successful career that lasted over sixty years. Due to the extraordinary popularity of his work, millions of reproductions have been made of his paintings. He was a talented artist, dedicated to his craft, and is still celebrated for his remarkable ability to create visions of the American landscape that continue to captivate the public today.
