This beautiful and very large painted porcelain plaque was made by the Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, in the 19th century, and shows the Sacred Family of Mary, Christ, and Joseph. It is after the Italian High Renaissance masterpiece by Correggio the 'Madonna della Scodella,' painted c. 1528-1530 and currently in the Galleria Nazionale di Parma.
Correggio was a leading figure of the Italian High Renaissance, a master of chiaroscuro, his oeuvre anticipated the Baroque in many ways, and this work was acclaimed by critics as far back as Vasari, as a 'panel of diving painting.' The artists at the Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory successfully carried the artistic qualities of the original over to the porcelain, with this excellently executed decorative panel. It bears beehive mark to reverse, and is set in a giltwood frame.
