Description
"Earth in Repose" in the Celeste and Sea collection is an original painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti in the medium of Encaustic. Encaustic, meaning "to burn in" is an ancient and alchemic art from originating in Greece and Egypt.
Layers of purified beeswax, often up to fifty, are mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin and painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then each layer is fused to the layer beneath with the flame of a torch.
Shima holds a special reverence for the quality materials and unseen details in the complex and labor-intensive encaustic process that is a quiet whisper to the understated, refined luxury of her paintings. Her aesthetic is minimal. Combined with her choice of all natural elements in an earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity.
Shima's inspiration is borne from growing up in the abundance of water and the endless big sky of Montana. Shima paints vision of Peace revealing what lies beyond appearance free of the confines of perception. -
