Shima Shanti is a contemporary encaustic painter working in the ancient art form of painting with molten beeswax and fusing with fire. "How Surely Gravity's Law" is inspired by the meeting place of land and sea where earth and water merge; the fleeting moment between time and space where one gives way to the other. Up to 50 layers of molten beeswax mixed with earth pigments are painted on custom-made Russian Baltic birch panel then each layer is fused with the flame of a torch. Choosing of all natural earth elements combined with Shima's minimal aesthetic create patina and texture that is storied, translucent, and luminous. In this simplicity unexpected levels of complexity surface. Her inspiration is borne from growing up in the endless abundance of water and big sky of Montana. This connection to nature has gifted me with an innate sense of color and composition.
