Description
“Yosemite Valley”was painted in 1901, and features the unparalleled view of the rugged canyon surrounded by towering granite cliffs. This is an impressive, luminous, romantic painting that includes a figure of a fisherman casting his line into the rushing river. The inclusion of this figure not only adds additional interest to the visual composition by giving the viewer a sense of the grand scale of the imposing landscape, it also creates a narrative and introduces a little extra ancillary story. Judging by the large number of fish he displays in his left hand, this angler is having an excellent and very fruitful day.
The painting also showcases the dynamic energy of the waterfall and the fast moving flow of the Merced River. This is a Barbizon-style work, moving towards Impressionism, set in an elaborate, original antique style gessoed and gilded frame. -
