Description
Size: 12.5 x 19.25? Frame: 21.5 x 27.5? Beautiful 19th century birds-eye maple frame with original gilt liner. Linen mat with water gilt filet; archival materials, museum glass.
A lone cowboy sits motionless on his horse in a vast prairie. His lowered head, accentuated by the tilt of his hat, confirms the painting’s title. Yet, his grip on the reigns suggests it’s only a temporary respite and, in a minute or two, he and his steed, which appears alert and ready, will resume their work.
Masters and his wife, Carlene, made 2 trips to the West, one to San Francisco in 1962 and another to Mexico in 1966[1]. Years later, photos from these trips served as inspiration for a small group of western scenes.
[1] The 1966 trip to San Francisco was to the Photographic Society of America awards ceremony where his film, “The Storm”, won the top five honors. The following year, “The Storm” won first place at the Caan Film Festival, Amateur Division. -
