Monumental Painting by "The Father of Artisan Furniture" Wendell Castle

$ 8,995
  • Description
    Monumental 88.75"H x 69.25"W painting by artisan furniture maker Wendell Castle, known as the "father of art furniture".

    Gouache and marker on paper.

    Black metal frame with glass.

    The artist and designer Wendell Castle (1932-2018) was a pioneer of a new type of handcrafted and sculptural form, one that blurred the line between art and craft when it emerged in the 1960s. Working in wood, including the technique he developed using stacked laminated wood, or in hand-carved Fiberglass, he creates bold and graceful expressions of pure form, voluminous shapes that reference the body. Along with his work as a sculptor, Castle was an educator, beginning at the School for American Craftsmen at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the early ‘60s. In 2007 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Design from the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

    His work is included in the permanent collections of museums including The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York; the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.; The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Detroit Art Institute.
