Description
Presented is a vintage WWII British War Savings Poster. This colorful blue and yellow poster features a British bulldog wearing an HMS Victory sailor cap. Set within a red speech bubble above the dog is the text, “More Ships- Come On!,” printed in red letters. Below, “War Savings are Warships…,” is printed in white and yellow clock letters against a navy background.
The poster was issued by three different committees- the National Savings Committee in London, the Scottish Savings Committee in Edinburgh, and the Ulster Savings Committee in Belfast. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the War Office reorganized the Regional Savings Committees and launched the War Savings Campaign.
Savings groups were set up by volunteers in work places, schools and clubs to promote the purchase of savings stamps and bonds. An individual could buy a savings stamp for as little as sixpence or for two shillings and sixpence. Once they purchased a total of 15 shillings worth, they could exchange the stamps for a National Savings Certificate. If they had £5 worth of stamps, they could exchange for a Defense Bond. Both certificates and bonds were guaranteed to give a good rate of return after the war.
Posters printed by the War Savings Committee encouraged people not to spend their extra cash on unnecessary items when they could use it to contribute to the war effort through the purchase of war savings, instead.
