"Right is Might" Vintage WWII U.S. Army Recruitment Poster by Stuart Graves

$ 2,500
  • Description
    This is a vintage WWII U.S. Army recruitment poster, illustrated by Stuart Graves. The poster was printed in 1942 and features four large Army tanks firing on an open field of battle. The closest tank’s tread is lettered with the slogan "RIGHT IS MIGHT." At the bottom of the poster, a text block urges “Men 18-19” to “Choose Now” and “Apply At Any U.S. Army Recruiting and Induction Station.” Along with the plea for enrollment is a list of thirteen U.S. Army departments in which they could serve, including the Medical Department, Corp of Engineers, Air Forces, Signal Corps, Infantry, Calvary, Field Artillery, and more. This poster reminded Americans of their duty to protect their country's freedom, by serving in the United States Army.

    The Second World War ushered in the biggest government-led advertising campaign to date, critical for raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, stimulating production, and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned some of the nation’s leading artists to produce the stark, colorful graphic designs. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war.

    The most common themes found in the posters were the American duty to serve, the consequences of careless talk, supporting the war effort at home through conservation and the purchasing of War Bonds, and anti-German and anti-Japanese propaganda. The posters reminded the American populace that victory over the Axis was not a given, and certainly would not be achieved without the whole-hearted support of all men, women, and children. By the time of the armistice in November 1918, the American government had produced more than 20 million copies of some 2,500 distinct poster designs.
