Giovanni Piranesi, Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo
-
Description
Etching with engraving on 3 joined sheets of thick laid paper, 1200 x 700mm., faint original folds. Framed and glazed, overall size: 88.6cm by 140.2cm.
A spectacular topographical representation of Rome and the Field of Mars, or Campus Martius, the main map depicted on a large stone tablet as an archaeological discovery, rooting it back to the inset plan of ancient Rome, presented as if on a sheet of parchment in the lower right corner. The ‘Pianta di Roma’ was separately issued around 1774, as evidenced by the dedication to Pope Clement XIIII, which appears carved on a large fragment of entablature at the foot of the main plan, who died that year, andby it’s first recorded mention in the frequently updated ‘Catalogo Incise’ in an edition issued likewise in 1774. It was, however, often found as an impressive folding frontispiece to later Roman editions of the famous ‘Vedute di Roma’ issued from this date, as is the case with this fine example, and in subsequent posthumous editions from Paris, after the printing plates were taken there by Piranesi’s sons during the Napoleonic era. The extensive text panels to the sides and belo, begin with Piranesi’s own ‘Avvertimento dell’Autore’, in the upper left corner , extolling the virtues of his splendid work, and continue with a comprehensive index to the many sites and monuments he illustrated in his principal archaeological works, ‘Antichita Romane’, ‘Della Magnificenza’ and ‘Campo Marzio’. -
