A monumental framed woodcut print by Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000) titled Tyrannus, 1982. Tyrannus features an abstract male nude comprised of an intricate network of sinewy anatomical lines in black with the title and date in red. Signed, titled and inscribed A.P. (artist proof) by the artist. This woodcut is framed in a 1.75" wide silver leaf wooden frame. A 4.5" wide off-white linen matting surrounds the paper woodcut print. The overall frame size is 92.5" H x 51.25" W. The image size within the matting is 79" H x 38.5" W. This woodcut was cut and printed from one single piece of wood, which is quite impressive. Black and red ink on ivory paper.

Leonard Baskin is widely considered one of the preeminent figures of 20th century American art. Creatively active for over five decades as a sculptor, print maker, painter, illustrator, critic, book publisher, and educator, his work resonates with a rare degree of visual, social, and intellectual intensity. He was, however, most notable for his monumental woodcuts that brought figurative printmaking on par with the abstract expressionists who were popular at the time. Baskin received numerous honors, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He had many retrospective exhibitions, including those at the Smithsonian, the Albertina, and the Library of Congress.
