Pair of large Meiji Era Japanese woodblock prints
Japanese, Late 19th Century
Frames: height 42.5cm, width 78.5cm, depth 2cm
Prints: height 35cm, width 78.5cm
These excellent woodblock prints were made in Japan in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, an era of vast social and economic change in Japan, and one too of prolific artistic output, including the realm of prints such as these. Each piece was made in a series of three columns, and depict scenes of women in beautiful dress engaging in aspects of courtly lifestyle. Their garments are coloured with rich and vibrant reds and blues, which fade down into white, and behind them the rooms open up with beautiful views of landscapes, cities in one, and mountains. The colour palette is simple and beautifully effective, and they consist a fine pair of works for any collector, or appreciator of Japanese, culture, history, and art. - More Information
