The Demini River is a tributary of the Rio Negro and flows through the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, bordering the rises of Serra do Aracá Park, State of Amazonas, Brazil
Sebastião Salgado spent six years traveling through the Brazilian Amazon, photographing the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region: its forests, rivers, mountains, and the people who live there—an irreplaceable treasure of humanity. As Salgado describes it: "For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world's largest single natural laboratory."
During his journey, Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes, documenting the daily life of the Yanomami, Asháninka, Yawanawá, Suruwahá, Zo'é, Kuikuro, Waurá, Kamayurá, Korubo, Marubo, Awá, and Macuxi. His photographs capture their deep family bonds, hunting and fishing practices, meal preparations, face and body painting, the role of shamans, and their dances and rituals.
Salgado has dedicated this body of work to the indigenous peoples of Brazil's Amazon region, writing: "My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in so years' time this book will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on." -
