Rare 16th Century Sculpture in Precious White Marble of Carrara, Mary with child
-
Description
Rare antique sculpture in italian white Carrara marble. Great artistic quality, not signed. This rare sculpture can be dated to around the middle of the 16th century in the Renaissance period. The two figures are very simple, linear and sketched as this historical period predicted. Maria's dress is stiff with no movements. Her faces are barely visible. Most likely this sculpture was made to be placed in a niche in the wall, therefore visible only from the front. Probably there were some elements that were lost, you can see a hole in Mary's hand that could originally have had a cross and on her head there could originally have been a crown.
