Louis-Marin Bonnet 1736-1793
The painter and engraver Louis-Marin Bonnet was a student of Jean-Charles François and one of the best known engravers of the 18th century Paris. He is well recorded for his polychrome prints in chalk and pastel manner, reproducing works by famous masters such as Boucher, Huet or Lagrenée.
Bonnet invented the technique of printing with white plates on blue paper, which seemed to be executed in chalks, so that the prints could barely be distinguished from the originals. Bonnet’s technique is described in the book ‘Le Pastel en gravure’ (1769). -
