Landscape View of a Lake with Onlookers
Signed and dated (l.r.): Maria W. Chapin, 1838.
Watercolor on paper, in a period gilt frame.
18 1/8” x 26 5/8”.
Over-all in fine original condition, minor toning.
This rare early watercolor by a female artist is presumably from New York State. The view overlooking a lake with figures is a wonderful account of life in America in the early 19th c.
