Beautiful, serene sepia watercolor of a moonlight sail on archival paper attributed to Robert Montgomery. Signed lower left. Condition is excellent. Recently professionally matted but not framed. Circa 1890. Provenance: A Red Bank, New Jersey collector.
Robert Montgomery was a Belgian artist born in Antwerp in 1839 and died there in 1893. He was a painter. Training at the Academy in Antwerp. Considered one of our best marine painters. Participated in the Salons in Ghent in 1868 (Park view; surroundings Antwerp, A water hole on the Kalmthoutse heide; sunset, Swamp in the heath; morning effect), 1874 (Ardara; West Ireland, Bergstroom after the thunderstorm; Ireland, The bay from Lochrus; Irish coast at low tide, Forest view; Ireland), 1877 (Clouded weather; Irish coast), 1883 (At sea), at the 'Exposition historique de l'Art belge 1830-1880' in Brussels in 1880 (Marine; Irish coast), at the 'Exposition Générale des Beaux-Arts' in Brussels in 1884 (The wreck).
