Wave Hill - Hand Made Paper Work With Geographical Maps From Wave Hill in NYC
-
Description
Tessa Grundon's "Wave Hill" is a 41 x 41-inches artwork composed of 16 handmade paper squares.
Grundon's work often references the topography and history of a place and its ever-changing environment. To create her pieces, Grundon uses an array of materials and artifacts relating to specific geographical locations - local maps, wax from nearby beehives, pigments from the muds, earth, plants, and charcoal, debris found along the strandlines of shores and riverbanks both rural and urban.
With these materials, she creates works that embody a sense of place, totems of landscapes she knows and loves.
This particular piece was created during Grundon's Art Residency at Wave Hill, a 28 acres estate on the Hudson River in Riverdale, New York. Earth and beeswax from Wave Hill are what creates the underlying texture, on top of which Grundon etched her own personal interpretation of topographic maps from the surrounding area. Despite the geometric pattern of the composition, the overall feeling is of organic simplicity. The dialoguing squares are populated by wavy lines of topographic maps that Grundon re-interprets in an ever-changing pattern. The different shades of earth imbuing the paper create a subtle transition throughout the composition. The viewer is welcomed by a feeling of calm and tranquillity, typical of Grundon's work.
Very often she works on commission to create pieces that are specifically created to reflect the topography of a unique piece of land.
This piece is sold framed. The unframed dimensions are 35" x 35". -
