The Arch of Septimus Severus in Rome
Inscribed by the artist in black ink on the lower center of recto of the mount of the second: Vue de l'Arc de Septime Severe, situe au pied du Capitole a Rome
This small-scaled, round watercolor is representative of Nicolle’s work for the tourist trade, who craved easily transportable souvenirs of the Eternal City. Nicolle has laid this view of Rome, which is painstakingly drawn with pen and ink and finished with watercolor, on a mount with gold strips and colored wash framing lines, and then inscribed in French with black ink with the location of the site he depicted. -
