Large Italian Bed Canopy
-
Description
Large Italian bed canopy, or corona (also known in France as a ciel de lit), circa 1760-1780. Hand-carved giltwood with painted detail decoration. Portion of reverse side is unfinished (probably originally set against a wall). Wonderful architectural element that can function as originally intended over a bed or canape sofa, or instead perhaps wired as a light fixture.
Good condition. Stable, sturdy. Wear consistent with age and use. Small portions of canopy missing around lower rim. Minor losses to gilt and gesso. Approximately one fourth of side is unfinished (probably set against a wall originally). Nice large scale. Gilt finish is water gilding - must not be cleaned with water. -
