19th Century Swedish Gustavian Style Pair of Painted Bedside Chests
-
Description
A beautiful pair of Swedish Gustavian style painted chests from the 19th century with carved guilloché detail around the apron; canted corner posts; and square, fluted legs. Each chest has three drawers, brass hardware and original locks with keys. The patina is a chalky Gustavian neutral ivory with a bit of natural wood showing through in areas.
The Gustavian style, named after King Gustav III of Sweden, is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. King Gustav III was enamored with the neoclassical style and therefore created his own interpretation for Sweden. -
