Anthroposophic Style Bookshelf by Rudolf Steiner's Follower, Austria ca 1930s
-
Description
This peculiar bookshelf’s origins can be traced back to Rudolf Steiner’s circle and was made in the so-called Anthroposophic style. Aesthetically, the movement took established silhouettes and morphed them into warped geometries often comprised of multifaceted angular surfaces.
Anthroposophy was a philosophy created by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) an Austrian philosopher, scientist and artist. His philosophical concept was founded on the idea that human intellect is capable of communicating with a spiritual realm. Steiner built approximately thirteen buildings that expressed his philosophy. In its sculptural quality and solid wood construction devoid of metal joints, this bookshelf is in line with Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophic theories. The design is reminiscent of Edwardian Arts and Crafts pieces, especially the pegged sides. The pegged mortise and tenon joinery is quite rough, serving its purpose of holding the structure together, but this rustic aesthetic also contributes to the overall impression of organicity. The five shelves aren’t symmetrically arranged, making it possible to store objects of diverse shapes and sizes. This asymmetry also applies to the edges and finishes that suites the handcrafted solid wood - most likely oak - construction. The U shaped ends on both sides are distinctive additions characteristic of the anthroposophic style.
Anthroposophy is originally a school of thought that combines spirituality and materiality for a better humanity. According to Steiner, the thought can also be translated into forms and colours. Everything by which we are immediately surrounded in life takes on an artistic form, therefore furniture is capable of vivifying the environment and like this bookshelf’s, its approach to design is organic functionalism.
