Description
Attributed to Joseph Clark, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, ca. 1790
Mahogany, mahogany veneer, maple and figural birch inlays (panel)
Signed monogram, brass original.
Over-all in excellent condition, old finish
Provenance: Important New Hampshire Collection
This fine Hepplewhite four drawer chest with original brass exhibits attributes such as, the drop-panel in the skirt and detailed inlay patterns, used in Portsmouth workshops.
Similar examples are illustrated in Portsmouth Furniture Masterworks from the New Hampshire Seacoast edited by Brock Jobe. p. 114-119. This piece was discovered in a home in Greenfield, New Hampshire, where Clark worked for a few years. The Greek Key inlay on the top edge of this bureau is similar to that seen on a card table that was found in a home belonging to the Avery family, who were descendants of Clark. -
