AN EXHIBITION QUALITY MID-19TH CENTURY BURR WALNUT CREDENZA / DISPLAY CABINET
-
Description
An outstanding walnut credenza / display cabinet of exhibition quality with gilt ormolu mounts in the manner of Holland and Sons.
English, Circa 1850.
The burr walnut sarcophagus shaped top with gilt ormolu lotus carved beading having curved inset glazed panels above two glazed central panelled doors and concave shaped ends.
The top being burr walnut veneered, banded in tulipwood and finely strung with ebony, also conforms with the surrounds to the end panels and central doors, which enclose a newly velvet lined fitted interior with two adjustable walnut shelves.
To each corner are four exquisitely carved acanthus leaf and fluted gilt brass mounted columns of exceptional quality with each having solid gilt brass chased and turned capitals and plinths, a central flat relief having two finely chased gilt brass patreas. The whole being adorned with fine quality ormolu gilt brass mounts, beading and foliated mouldings raised on shaped plinth base.
The exquisite craftsmanship, fine detail and quality of castings, as well as superb design and proportions all point to extremely fine London cabinet maker of the mid-19th Century Holland and Sons. Although it is unsigned the quality of this cabinet and design all point to the work of this fine cabinet makers and suppliers to the Royal family.
In extremely fine condition this cabinet was brought from a private collection where is had been on display in a Kensington town house for the majority of its life and handed down many generations. We have very carefully cleaned and restored this cabinet to an exception condition and it even retains its original guiding to the brass ormolu mounts.
Note the attention to detail having the glazed panels to the top being shaped in both directions from top to bottom and also side to side, an extremely hard process that many cabinet makers would dare try to achieve and very rarely seen, this process would be hard to achieve in todays standard let along 170 years ago.
