Description
This storage box is one of a group of 60+ objects that have been attributed to an unknown artist known as the “Compass Artist” for his use of distinctive compass work and freehand decoration. Several of these objects were inscribed, identifying the original owners as inhabitants in around Lancaster County, Pa. with an emphasis on the area known as the Cocalico Valley.
The Prussian blue, vermillion, red lead and white lead palette of this example is typical of the paints used in other objects decorated by the Compass Artist. The hardware construction is also typical with hinges made from a thin wire and thin strip of tinned sheet iron, a fan shaped escutcheon plate decorated with punched dots and a trapezoidal hasp. -
