    Provenance: The Gillette Family of Hartford, Connecticut and New York; Ginsburg & Levy, Inc., New York; Mr. William C. Whitledge, Baltimore, Maryland.

    Reference: There is a New London County chest on chest exhibited in the Lyman Allyn Museum exhibit see entry 56, page 53, of Myers and Mayhew, New London County Furniture, 1640-1840, exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Museum, for a chest on chest with a similar arrangement of the feet. That exhibition discusses the close ties between Newport and New London County which is in evidence on this desk.
